A hydrogen network for Berlin

Timetable for a climate-neutral and reliable energy supply in Berlin

NBB Berlin-Brandenburg has joined together with partners to develop a timetable to upgrade the Berlin gas network for hydrogen transport.

H2 transport network for Berlin

In order to supply green energy from summer to winter, Berlin needs to establish hydrogen infrastructure in addition to the existing electricity and heating network. As a result, NBB Netzgesellschaft Berlin-Brandenburg, a GASAG Group company, has joined together with partners to develop a timetable for upgrading the Berlin gas network for hydrogen transport in three phases. In the first phase, a start network for hydrogen will be established for Berlin by 2030, which will be able to supply Berlin network connections >500 MW with hydrogen, particularly Vattenfall Wärme’s five large, gas-powered combined heat and power stations in Berlin. The most important routes are two high-pressure lines covering a total of 60 kilometres, one in western and one in eastern Berlin. In the second phase, the plan is to connect consumers with power in excess of 30 megawatts.

“The upgrade of the existing gas infrastructure for hydrogen transport is a cost-effective opportunity for Berlin to quickly advance the decarbonisation and heating transition of the nation’s capital. Our routes are already in place and largely hydrogen-ready.”

Maik Wortmeier, Chairman Managing Director of the NBB Netzgesellschaft Berlin-Brandenburg
