H2GE Rostock
H2GE Rostock - the energy hub in eastern Germany
With the H2GE project, Rostock can be established as a future energy hub for low-carbon hydrogen and CO2 management, thus strengthening industry in eastern Germany and creating new jobs in the region.
H2GE will create a gigawatt decarbonisation plant in Rostock for the conversion of natural gas into low-carbon hydrogen. Relevant quantities of hydrogen will be made available for the development and conversion of up to 400 kilometres of hydrogen pipeline between Rostock, Berlin and the industrial clusters in the Leipzig area. In addition, the project supports the foundation for the expansion of hydrogen storage in large salt caverns of the underground gas storage facilities in Saxony-Anhalt in order to ensure flexibility and security of supply with hydrogen. It supports the supply of industries with low-carbon hydrogen and thus the timely, gradual reduction of CO2 emissions by millions of tonnes per year compared to the current use of fossil fuels.
The project partners
H2GE Rostock is a joint project of VNG AG and Equinor ASA.
VNG AG is a group of over 20 companies active in the European energy industry with around 1,600 employees. As a gas importer and wholesaler as well as an operator of critical gas infrastructure, the Leipzig-based Group plays a central role in ensuring the security of the gas supply in Germany. With “VNG 2030+ ”, VNG is also pursuing an ambitious strategy for rolling out renewable and decarbonised gases such as biogas and hydrogen, paving the way for a sustainable, secure supply and, in the long term, climate-neutral energy system of the future. VNG’s investments in infrastructure and green gas projects are primarily in central and eastern Germany, with the aim of making a significant contribution to structural change as a company firmly anchored in the region. EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG is the main shareholder of VNG.
Equinor is an international energy company headquartered in Norway. With 22,000 employees in nearly 30 countries, our ambition is to be a leading company in the energy transition. As a company we have been shaped by 50 years of solving challenges in the North Sea. We believe that most things are possible until proven otherwise. This energy has helped us become the largest supplier of energy to Europe, and a pioneer in renewables and low carbon solutions. Equinor is committed to the UN sustainability goals. We will contribute to making energy sustainable and available to all. We support the Paris agreement and aim to become a net zero company by 2050. The world’s energy transition is the most important task of our time. We may not have all the answers, but with knowledge and cooperation we will contribute to finding them.
